
The center director is Carter Butts, Associate Professor in Sociology and the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences. Butts is an internationally recognized expert in the field of social networks, and has an extensive record of interdisciplinary collaboration with The Center for Networks and Relational Analysis is directed by Carter T. Butts. Butts is currently a Chancellor’s Professor with appointments in the departments of Sociology, Statistics, Computer Science, and EECS, and is a member of the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). Butts is an internationally recognized expert in the field of network analysis, and has an extensive record of interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues in engineering, statistics, computer science, and chemistry (including serving in PI roles on multiple cross-cutting projects). Butts has been the recipient of a number of professional awards and honors (including the Freeman and Richards awards from the International Network for Social Network Analysis, and the Leo Goodman award from the American Sociological Association Section on Methodology), and is a fellow of the AAAS. The PI of the Networks, Computation, and Social Dynamics lab at Calit2, his group works on a wide range of theoretical, methodological, and applied problems involving social and biophysical networks, computational and statistical methodology, measurement, and decision making, with application areas ranging from communication and social influence to protein aggregation and enzyme discovery.
